Expanded Snap Amp

The Snap Amp Concept is superbly flexible and I've used it a number of times but in some cases I've had to compromise or choose another solution because of the limitations of bus voltage and in most cases the non-industrial I/O design required quite a bit of external circuitry to 'harden" the I/O fo...

Re: microstepping resolution

I'm not sure exactly how this current control is implemented but my understanding of it could explain the current distortions and smoothness issues I've seen on my steppers and brushless servos.. My understanding is that the best motor smoothness and lowest motor heating is achieved by matching the ...

Re: microstepping resolution

This is a continuation of this thread that was started many months ago and now I have the system running. I was a bit surprised when I noticed I could hear and feel the stepper rotating with the high resolution it was supposed to be running with. At 3.8 amps, Microstepper amplitude at 110 the calcul...

Re: Snap Amp Noise affecting USB connection

I re-installed the questionable K flop and it RESET in 30 min of running the one stepper and one servo in closed loop. I re-installed the "good" Kflop and it has been running over 8 hours with no trouble. It does look like the issue is repeatable. I would like to return this item for an exchange if ...

Re: Snap Amp Noise affecting USB connection

I don't think there is much that could change when swapping out the K flop but I've been surprised before. I've removed and reinstalled the same board a number of times when checking the installation and still had the same problem. Changing to the other board only amounts to umplugging a few ribbon ...

Re: Snap Amp Noise affecting USB connection

Update: I removed the additional external cap from the RESET line and it's still running with both stepper and closed loop servo after 3 hours. I expect that this will continue running OK. Now I have to get a good cable for the other servo and get that connected to check the operation with all the m...

Re: Snap Amp Noise affecting USB connection

I ran the test with the stepper and servo running open loop with the 50 pin disconnected and had the same result after about 10 minutes. I installed a 10000pf cap on the K flop 26 pin on the reset line still running open loop on both motors. Same result I replaced the K flop board with one that was ...

Re: Snap Amp Noise affecting USB connection

OK, I found a problem with one of the servo feedback cables, It has two shields, an internal and an external shield. The internal one is supposed to be connected to 5v common, and the external one is chassis ground earth ground. They were shorted together somewhere within the cable. I removed that m...

Re: Snap Amp Noise affecting USB connection

I must apologize for the C code and formatting. I'm a novice at C so I've a lot to learn. My C programming amounts to "see and hack until it works". Not too much finesse yet. The Kflop has version 1.3 silkscreened on it and I purchased it July of 2019. I also have another k flop that is at least 2 y...

Re: Snap Amp Noise affecting USB connection

See attached sketch. It's wired this way currently to isolate the issue. There are other motors but they will be running on the other SnapAmp and are not connected now. None of the power supplies are grounded. The stepper motor frame is not currently grounded but will be once mounted on the machine,...
