Subject: Maxon motor connection
Dear all,

I bought a Harmonic Drive gear with this motor attached to it:

EC 60 flat with MILE Encoder and Protection Class IP 54

I want to build a 4th axis from it.

The whole gear-motor-combination is a coordinated system, meaning that its not easy to exchange the motor (which was my initial plan: exchange for NEMA stepper motor).

So my question is: do you have an idea if this motor can "easily" be connected to my KSTEP/KFLOP?
If this helps, I could easily only use it in stepper mode (even prefer, since I guess its much less hassle).

Hi Johannes,

I don't believe a stepper driver would work.  You would need a brushless DC Driver such as 1/2 of a SnapAmp.  I don't see any interface specs for the encoder:

The MILE encoder is used to make optimal use of the flat motor in high-precision applications and position-ing tasks. Behind the abbreviation MILE hides Maxon’s Inductive Little Encoder, the worldwide smallest in-ductive rotary encoder. Its operating principle is based on the detection of high-frequency inductivity which generates eddy current in an electrically conducting target.

Doesn't seem to be an incremental encoder so I don't know how it could be interfaced.

Hi Tom,
thank you very much for the quick reply. So either I might try a SnampAmp or motor replacement. Since I feel a bit more confident on the mechanical side, the second option might be less risky..:)
