I think Analog would be simplest. Modbus is relatively slow. Modbus from the PC would be indeterminate (You can't count on Mach3 or anything under Windows User mode to be real-time). We do now have some ModBus routines that run in KFLOP but serial ModBus communication would always be slower than Analog commands. If you want to do Rigid Tapping spindle position feedback is required (an encoder). Does your spindle have an encoder? I didn't see any encoder outputs on the VFD.

Subject: Re: VFD spindle control, Analog or Modbus
I have this cable connected to my PC which allows me to configure
the drive as well as monitor loads etc. I maybe misunderstanding
the terms modbus and RS-232. I assumed that they worked together
to control the VFD.
I plan to add an encoder to my spindle since it doesn't have one.
Just looking for which method of control would be better for rigid
tapping since I hate having to redo work later on. Only want to
have wire my VFD one time.
I well just go with analog since that sounds like a better route.
Thanks

Hi Wes,
You didn't include a link to your VFD manual. I
Googled
and found this:

[DynoMotion] VFD
spindle control, Analog or Modbus
I will be using Mach3 for controlling my
mill and I was wondering which would be a
better control method for my VFD.
I can use either an analog signal from my kanalog
board or modbus
RS232/RS485. My VFD is a Teco
7300CV
I do plan to eventually trying and get rigid
tapping working and was not sure which method
would work better.
